School Board

Like the Town Council, Brunswick’s School Board consists of nine members, seven of whom each represent a single Town district, and two of whom are “at large.” Each school board member is elected for a 3-year term and receives $300 per year for serving.

Members must be “voters or persons eligible to become voters” of the town of Brunswick, and, if running for a district seat, a resident of that district. Members may not hold any other town office nor be a town employee. State laws also apply (see Maine Revised Statutes Title 20-A, Section 1001 – 1004) .

Regular school board meetings are at 7 pm on the 2nd Wednesday of each month, and workshops are on the 4th Wednesday as needed. Five members of the school board eligible to vote in its proceedings constitute a quorum for the transaction of business. The school board must hold at least one meeting a month, except during July and August. All meetings of the school board are open to the public, except when state law requires meetings to be closed.

According to the Town charter, the school board “shall have all the powers conferred by law and shall perform all the duties imposed by law upon superintending school committees in regard to the care and management of the public schools of the town, except as otherwise provided in this Charter. The school board shall prepare budget estimates in detail of the several sums required during the ensuing fiscal year for the support of the public schools and shall furnish copies of such estimates to the manager on or before the beginning of such fiscal year.”

The school board must also “prepare and submit to the [Town Council] a 5-year school capital program at the same time that it submits its annual budget.”
